Bloomington is in the Design House
Friday, November 16th, 2007 by Kevin MakiceBloomington, Indiana is a unique mix of small-town community and big-city perks. The city of Bloomington is surprisingly tech-savvy, sporting an extensive local wiki and a growing awareness of its own technical expertise. At the Indiana University School of Informatics, our human-computer interaction program has a decidedly design focus and an active academic community, both online and off. Currently, projects—like the Design Studies Initiative and organizing a local Startup Weekend—are underway to connect our local human resources.
I am pleased to introduce you to several local bloggers of potential interest to the UX community. Current students and faculty in the HCI program at the School of Informatics include:

I found it very interesting to see the mix of design disciplines collected together as part of the Design Studies Initiative:
Ergonomic design
Fashion design
Graphic design
Human-computer interaction design
Instructional system design
Interior design
Media design
Textile design
Theatrical staging & lighting design

We are very excited about that initiative. The picture on the front page of that site was actually taken in our HCI Design House, a two-story home across the street from our main Informatics building that was used as a studio for a class last year. Since space is an issue at IU, we wound up sharing the space this year, effectively disrupting the studio environment. DSI offers a potential solution by creating a shared studio space and potential collaborations across disciplines.
