Details
Have you ever used a website where you enter some information and it magically remembers what you enter? Or what about listening to programmers talk about “databases” and “code”? Come and hear Joe Fiorini, an experienced web developer, explain what “programming” is and how it can help your web site. You will learn how to use object-oriented programming to get information from a form to a database, and from a database back out to a screen. Don’t know what a database is? No problem! He will explain that too!
If you already know all about programming, never fear! Joe will also be showing how to get started using Ruby on Rails, a growing and extremely popular framework for quickly writing web applications.
Speaker bio: Joe Fiorini is a web developer with 8 years of experience in programming for web sites. He has been using HTML and CSS since 1997. Currently he works for Telligent System (the creators of Community Server) as a Software Development Engineer; he develops and maintains sites for Microsoft’s developer community. Previously he worked for Tenth Floor, an interactive marketing company, as a Senior Web Developer. He has delivered technology presentations at various user groups, and to employees at Harley-Davidson and Progressive Insurance.

Presented by Christopher Juillet, PLC
- Are you a consultant?
- Have you been asked to do a special project for someone [on the side]?
- Have you thought about dabbling in another area of interest outside of your work?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, this meeting is for you! Setting consulting rates is always tricky. How much to charge, and why? There are many ways to establish a consulting rate–most of them neglect basic business principles. In this session, Christopher will show why those rate schemes often yield rates much lower than appropriate and how to establish a consulting rate you and your clients can live with.
Consultants and Independent Contractors SIG meeting
Topic: What value/services do you want from your SIG? Networking and ideas about consulting services. Meet in the Holiday Inn bar. RSVP to Lori Klepfer.
See NEOSTC for directions and registration.

If you’ve ever attended a NEOUPA event and thought to yourself - gee, I’d really love to present at one of these events, but what would I talk about for an hour? - here’s your chance to speak without a heavy commitment. We’re interested in putting together a roundtable discussion for Thursday March 28 that would feature a half dozen or so NEOUPA people talking about whatever is top of mind for you right now in your work. Have you found a great tool or website that has made your work as a UX professional easier? Have you recently completed some research that you’d like to share with a larger group outside your organization? The time commitment would be 5-10 minutes of talking, maybe some show and tell via the web or Powerpoint, and then discussion with the audience. We want this to be a collaborative environment where everyone has a chance to contribute.
If you are interested in speaking at this event, please email us as soon as possible. And if this date doesn’t work for you, but you’d like to speak at a future event, please let us know!
