From the event’s website:
The Brazilian Symposium of Human Factors on Computer Systems (IHC) is the main forum of the Brazilian Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community. This symposium brings together researchers, industry professionals, educators and students of various HCI-related disciplines, such as Computer Science, Psychology, Ergonomics and Graphic Design, among others.
We celebrate in 2008 the 10th anniversary of HCI events in Brazil. This has been a time for great progress: an entire generation of researchers has been produced spreading HCI knowledge countrywide. Usability and accessibility subjects have been integrated into governmental technological policies; industry is now fully aware of the importance of user-centered design practices. The event itself has solidified and expanded, giving birth to the Latin-American Conference in Human-Computer Interaction (CLIHC). Brazilian research has been acknowledged internationally and one of the major international conferences, the IFIP TC13 INTERACT has been hosted in Brazil in 2007.
During these past 10 years, we have reflected about the nature of Interaction. We managed to understand our users. We mastered the WWW and created solutions with emerging interaction technologies. Today, the relationship between humans and computers is an established and irrevocable fact. Interaction is now part of daily life: we are already living within ubiquitous computing; we are working on overcoming access barriers and on inclusion of disadvantaged populations. We are promoting society integration and disseminating the digital culture. Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are intensely used by Brazilian population.
This scenario poses a challenge for researchers – thinking of users no more as individuals but as interconnected communities. Even the concept of interaction quality has to be broadened to encompass the diversity of interactive systems usage, like in entertainment, security in information exchange and broadcast, participation in social and democratic processes as well as applications in critical areas like health and environment.
Human Computer Interaction impregnates modern life. HCI today is structural for systems design. HCI is already permanent in human life. Each day, HCI is more and more natural.
Within the challenges to be addressed in the next decade, as proposed by the Brazilian Society for Computing – SBC - there are also challenges for the HCI community. We invite you to discuss HCI for today and for the next 10 years. In particular we welcome contributions related to aging and User eXperience (UX) which discusses the many roles played by interactive systems at the different phases of human life, including users who learned to use the computer before learning to read, users who employ computer in the daily life as a mean to gain productivity, for entertainment and/or to socialize, and those seniors users who are learning the new technologies to improve their quality of life.
Promotion: Brazilian Computing Society in cooperation with ACM/SIGCHI.

Wednesday, October 8th
7:00pm.
Art Institute of Pittsburgh.
AIP is located downtown at 420 Boulevard of the Allies. We’ll be in room 440. Take the gold elevator up to the fourth floor. Take your first right and the room will be a few doors down on the left. There may be a security guy at the door - if there is just let him know you are there for the Refresh Pittsburgh meetup.
A HUGE thank-you goes out to our friend Norm Huelsman for offering to host a Refresh meeting at AIP.
Presentations
We have three presentation on tap for this one:
Michael Fulk is a an interactive developer at Wall to Wall and also does freelance work as Future Designs. He’ll be presenting “Bending the Pipes” - which will give us a crash course on making mashups, feeds and recombining web content with Yahoo Pipes and Dapper.
Next, Olivia Blonde is a web designer at the University of Pittsburgh and previous worked at the Carnegie Libraries where she was responsible for the redesign of the Carnegie Library website. She’ll present “Design Process in a Nutshell”. Each designer - or design group - develops a method for solving problems, then evolves that method over time. While no one person or group may view a problem from the same perspective, general similarities often appear in their approach. Olivia’s presentation will take us from requirements to concepts to design and to handoff.
Finally, Isaac Gierard, a new media developer at Elliance with be showing off a recent project of his, a “CSS Combiner”. Isaac will give a brief introduction to a recently developed open source CSS preprocessor for combining multiple CSS files into on and it’s benefits for website performance.
Also, we’ll be giving away one free pass to the Flashpitt conference taking place the following Friday!
Please RSVP!!
As usual, please RSVP to info@refreshpittsburgh.org so that we have a good idea of our headcount. I’ll make sure to bring the usual cookies and coffee too.

Ever stared at a blank Photoshop screen and just needed to “get started designing”? Ever been handed a 40 page spec sheet that you needed to build from? Ever wonder if this feature should even be built in the first place?
Not to be confused with usability testing—user research can help get client, designer and developer all on the same side of the table. A solid understanding of the user leads not only to true “usability” but even better ideas to build in the first place. With the right combination of tools and process—even designers and developers will demand user research with every project to the benefit of all.
Vince Frantz is an information designer and principal of Frantz I.D. Since 1996, he has spearheaded a broad scope of design projects across web, intra/extranet, print and motion media. Prior to that, Vince was an interaction designer and illustrator at Root Learning, Inc. After many years doing design and development, in 2005 he began designing a new form of organization that would enhance the user centered design and development process. In June of 2006, Sprokets launched as his own “ideal client” that would always align business strategy with end-user needs. Vince also founded the non-profit Public Square Group to help cities in Northeast Ohio employ a user centered approach to the design and development of sustainable skateboard parks.

At the University of Michigan, Duderstadt Center, Design Lab One The SOCHI and SCSI student groups have joined together with SourceForge to bring you the school year’s first design jam. At the event, participants will answer Mozilla’s call for participation, which requests that we put our heads together to come up with revolutionary new ideas for a browser, from a simple improvement on how new tabs work to a more complete browser interface redesign. You don’t have to be a Firefox user or an HCI student to attend. Everyone is welcome to share browsing habits, frustrations, and ideas. The groups will follow up with the ideas generated at this event during two additional design jams later in the semester at which they will sketch ideas and create prototypes. This is an opportunity to build experience and portfolio materials in interface design and contribute to open source in a way that matters with no long-term commitment. SourceForge will provide T-shirts to all the participants. If you plan to attend, RSSVP on Facebook to ensure enough pizza for all ( http://www.facebook.com/n/?event.php&eid=23492638077 ).

School of Design Fall 2008 Lecture Series Speakers
Giving Form to Vision: Balancing the Three Disciplines of Leadership, Innovation, & Execution
Stuart Morgan, Director of Industrial Design and Human Factors for Ethicon Endo-Surgery. Thursday, September 18, 8:00pm
Margaret Morrison Breed Hall, on the Carnegie Mellon main campus
For design to play a significant role in the success of an organization, the three disciplines of leadership, innovation, and execution must be active and in balance. Over the past six years, the role of design at Ethicon Endo-Surgery has changed from one of support to one of leadership. Through recent product examples, Morgan’s lecture will outline guiding principles, strategies, processes, methods, and tools employed to deliver significant results to the company, and show the importance of balancing the three disciplines of design.
Morgan is director of Industrial Design and Human Factors for Ethicon Endo-Surgery, a Johnson & Johnson Company based in Cincinnati, Ohio, that develops and markets advanced medical devices for minimally invasive and open surgical procedures. He is responsible for product branding and usability in the corporation, including design strategy and user research. He envisioned and led the development of ethnographic research methods and visualization tools, transforming the new product development process within the corporation and establishing usability as a standard of innovation in the surgical device industry. Under his leadership the industrial design and human factors group has moved from support into a leadership role.

Keith’s presentation …
There is a story behind every link: Tales of information architecture from ibm.com by Keith Instone
Ever wonder how a large corporate web site navigation system is designed, and how it evolves over time? How certain links find their way to the corporate home page, while other ones do not? How major changes in the corporation’s business affect the web site navigation? And how the IA of the corporate web site can give clues about how well the business is doing?
If so, then join Keith Instone as he tells stories about the information architecture of ibm.com. Example stories may include:
- The evolution of sitewide navigation categories like “solutions” and “services”
- Worldwide information architecture challenges
- The cultural shifts required to do something as (theoretically) simple as adding a “sign in” link to the masthead
- Tracking the evolution of a single web page as it signals fundamental shifts in how the business is operating “behind the scenes”
- The effect of selling off a key division of the company on the navigation system
- Balancing the strategic goals while handling day-to-day requests for changes to the navigation
- Techniques for dealing with executive home page link requests
The stories Keith tells will be in part determined by what you want to hear. Come prepared to select some high level links on ibm.com and see if Keith has any interesting stories to tell about them.
Keith Instone has been the information architecture lead for ibm.com for the last several years. He had been on the User experience design team since he joined IBM 6 and a half years ago. Keith is also active in the information architecture and user experience communities. Most of his professional volunteer time goes towards the User Experience Network.
