Accessibility: are you reaching everyone? (Cerritos, CA, USA)

Monday, March 16th, 2009 by Alexis Antonelli
May 8, 2009
9:00 amto4:00 pm

Los Angeles Chapter of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (LACASIST) presents their 2009 workshop.

This year’s program focuses on the accessibility and usability of products and services for persons with disabilities. Given the fine line between accessibility and usability in today’s realm of information technology, these words are often intertwined. Fundamentally, accessibility refers to ensuring that products and services are “available” to every user. Even then, however, the mere availability of an accessible technology does not necessarily ensure its usability. Ultimately, when users with disabilities are unable to use a product or service–deemed accessible or not–this becomes a usability issue that should be addressed holistically and with the proper tools. This workshop will focus on the following:

  • Learn who the users are and understand their needs
  • Explore accessible technologies that are currently available and preview some of the emerging accessible technologies to date
  • Examine what it means to design for accessibility by learning about accessibility guidelines as well as methodologies in practice
