thinkAbout 2009 (Philadelphia, PA, USA)

Monday, July 20th, 2009 by Conference Editor
September 16, 2009toSeptember 17, 2009

The 12th annual Strategic Horizons thinkAbout will be in historic Philadelphia on September 16-17. For more than a decade, thinkAbout has been the gathering place for professionals seeking to design and stage truly unique and memorable experiences in their enterprises.

In these challenging economic times, the ideas Joseph Pine & James Gilmore articulated in their books, The Experience Economy and Authenticity, are more important than ever. Recapturing our economic vitality requires that we shift more rapidly away from commoditized and easily replicated goods and services. We must focus on creating greater economic value that cannot be easily automated, outsourced, knocked-off, or over-leveraged.

Offering experiences and transformations provides that next generation of value. Exploring ideas for how to best offer each lies at the core of the thinkAbout event.

To this end, thinkAbout will challenge you to learn in highly participatory environments and react to the variety of non-traditional provocations. You will gain insights into the Experience Economy and the concomitant rising desire for authenticity. Throughout it all, you will be required to take creative risks and think in unique ways. It is the hallmark of thinkAbout.

What’s a “design slam”?
During the meeting, participants will be teamed and introduced to a full-fledged hypothetical project, including appropriate client-side deliverables. They’ll then have an opportunity to interview key players on the client’s team. The session will conclude with proposal presentations from each of the groups to the “clients” and the assembled audience.

Then the “clients” team will choose a winner. Members of the winning team will receive a plethora of praise from your peers and an award.

What’s in it for me?
This is a chance for interested IAs, designers, usability practitioners, developers and marketing professionals to get their hands dirty working side by side with colleagues as they tackle tough business problems in a fun and sometimes crazy environment. Knowledge transfer, technique sharing, and a social atmosphere makes this session stand out from the garden-variety “lecture-and-powerpoint” presentation.

Please try to arrive on time. The client team will be introducing the design challenge promptly at 6:40pm.

If you do not want to participate because you won’t be able to get to the meeting on-time or a have severe case of social phobia, fear not! We would like to have an audience during this session to play the role of users, and help choose the winning team.

This idea is shamelessly stolen (with permission) from the IA Summit’s IA Slam. For more information about the IA Slam, visit http://www.e-reiss.com/Seminars/IA%20Slam%20mini-site.aspx

SPEAKERS

Kenneth Allendoerfer, Federation Aviation Administration (FAA)

User-Centered Research and Development for the Next Generation Air Transportation System

The US air traffic control (ATC) system, one of the nation’s most complex information technology and communication networks, is increasingly plagued by congestion and delays. To address these problems, the FAA has embarked on a major redesign of the system, known as NextGen, which will change how controllers do their jobs and how they interact with technology. Meanwhile, the current generation of controllers, who began their careers using information technology with very different user interfaces and with very limited capabilities, is nearing retirement age. Now that a new generation of controllers is being hired and trained, we have the opportunity to modernize the ATC user interfaces, but which designs are the right ones? Which elements of the old systems should be preserved and which should be replaced? How do we manage this transition without disrupting operations? I will demonstrate and discuss several recent projects at the FAA Research Development and Human Factors Laboratory which use user-centered design and evaluation methods (such as cognitive task analysis, eye tracking, and click path analysis) to explore these issues.

About Kenneth Allendoerfer

Kenneth Allendoerfer is an engineering research psychologist with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), based at the FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center in Atlantic City, NJ. For more than 10 years, Mr. Allendoerfer has been conducting human-centered research, development, and evaluation activities examining new air traffic control technology, procedures, and concepts. His research interests include developing new usability metrics, information visualization, usable information security, and human error.

Scott Page, Interface Studio LLC

Making Transit Useful in Philly

Transit Oriented Development (TOD) is a national movement focused on encouraging growth and development in a way that leverages the value of local transit. In Philadelphia, many rail stations are located in areas that are largely vacant and underutilized. This, combined with a strong car culture, leaves Philadelphia’s rail infrastructure – one of the best in the country – largely overlooked.

Interface Studio LLC, an urban design and planning firm based in Philadelphia, was engaged by Neighborhoods Now to explore the opportunities to transform two under-used rail stations in Philadelphia into active and vibrant neighborhood amenities. The lecture will cover the key challenges to making transit useful in Philadelphia and share the findings of the study which tackles TOD as a far-reaching design problem.

About Scott Page

Scott Page founded Interface Studio to test and develop a unique and innovative set of urban design ideas. Scott is an urban designer and planner with degrees from the University of Pennsylvania School of Design and the Georgia Institute of Technology Architecture Department and has more than fourteen years of diverse experience ranging from large-scale master planning to site-specific design and redevelopment strategies. He has been a leader in developing innovative neighborhood plans targeted toward enhancing communication, awareness and empowerment at the community level. Scott was a lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Design for more than 10 years and is a regular contributor to Planetizen’s Interchange blog. His research on urban design, emerging technologies and sustainability has been presented and published both in the United States and Europe.

ABOUT THE DISCUSSION

As design professionals, we strive to create great products and great experiences, both physical and virtual, for the general public or niche markets. But many times — the cynic would say most of the time — we miss the mark. The world is full of things that are difficult and frustrating to use. And that’s because designers make assumptions about how users think and do things.

Great design is user-centric design.

User-centered design (UCD) is an approach that places the user at the center of the design process from the beginning. By understanding real people’s needs and behaviors during the conception and refinement of a design, we can ensure that a new product succeeds.

This discussion will include perspectives on user-centered design from professionals who create experiences in the fields of architecture, interactive design, and product design. Each panelist will present examples and strategies relevant to practitioners of user-centric design in any discipline. Those interested in architecture, graphic design, human factors, information architecture, interaction design, product design, usability, and user experience will find the discussion highly informative and challenging.
