UXnet announces appointment of first Advisory Board

The User Experience Network (UXnet) is proud to announce the appointment of the following remarkable group of user experience thought leaders to its first Advisory Board: Aaron Marcus, Don Norman, Janice (Ginny) Redish, Louis Rosenfeld, Marc Rettig and Patrick Whitney.

“The UXnet Advisory Board will provide critical, strategic guidance to UXnet as we formalize our operations and further develop our mission,” said Dirk Knemeyer, a member of the UXnet Executive Council. “That such an amazing group has signed on as our advisors underscores the importance of the role UXnet is playing and intends to play in the future.”

Indeed, UXnet’s first Advisory Board is comprised of a virtual Who’s Who of User Experience.

Aaron Marcus, the founder and President of Aaron Marcus and Associates, has written over 150 articles, (co-)written five books including The Cross-GUI Handbook for Multiplatform User Interface Design and Graphic Design for Electronic Documents and User Interfaces, contributed chapters or case studies to seven books, and serves on the editorial boards of seven industry publications. Mr. Marcus has lectured, tutored, and consulted internationally for more than 30 years.

Don Norman, cofounder of the Nielsen Norman Group and a Professor at Northwestern University, is the author of fourteen books, available in sixteen languages including The Design of Everyday Things and Emotional Design. Dr. Norman has received the Lifetime Achievement Award from ACM SIGCHI, the Franklin J. Taylor Award for “outstanding contribution to the field of Applied Experimental and Engineering Psychology” from the American Psychological Association, and the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Computer & Cognitive Science from the Franklin Institute.

Janice (Ginny) Redish, founder and President of Redish & Associates, has (co-)authored the books User and Task Analysis for Interface Design and A Practical Guide to Usability Testing as well as numerous articles and book chapters. Dr. Redish has received the first the first award as Outstanding Plain Language Leader in the Private Sector from the Center for Plain Language, the President’s Award from the Society for Technical Communications, the Goldsmith Award from IEEE, and the RIGO Award from ACM SIGDOC.

Louis Rosenfeld, an independent information architecture consultant and founder of Rosenfeld Media, co-authored the best-selling book, Information Architecture for the World Wide Web, which is used as a standard text in many graduate-level classes. Rosenfeld is one of UXnet’s cofounders and also cofounded the Information Architecture Institute. He serves or has served on advisory boards for the Content Management Professionals group, the AIGA Experience Design Community, and the Interaction Design Association.

Marc Rettig, founding principal of Fit Associates, has taught both lecture and studio courses at Carnegie Mellon’s Graduate School of Design, where he was the 2003 Nierenberg Distinguished Chair of Design, and the Institute of Design, IIT, in Chicago. Rettig served as Chief Experience Officer of the pace-setting user experience consultancy HannaHodge, and frequently speaks and conducts workshops in industry and academic settings around the world. He currently serves on the advisory boards of The Interaction Design Association and Rosenfeld Media.

Patrick Whitney is the director of the Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology, and is the Steelcase/Robert C. Pew Professor of Design. Professor Whitney was chairman of the program of the 1978 US Conference of the International Council on Graphic Design Associations, which was the first major meeting addressing the issues of evaluating design from the perspective of users. He was the President for the American Center for Design, editor of the Design Journal, and has published and lectured throughout the world.

Founded in 2004, the User Experience network (UXnet) makes connections between people, organizations and resources that represent user experience. With active initiatives currently building networks between locales, events, industry associations and UX managers, UXnet is a leading international non-profit organization representing the interests of the user experience industry. Blogging UXnet

We have started doing a little bit more publicity for UXnet. Yesterday, 2 UXnet executive council members added items to their blogs:

AIfIA Annual report mentions UXnet

Monday, July 19th, 2004 by Keith Instone

The Asilomar Institute for Information Architecture’s annual report mentions UXnet:

Given our specific focus within the larger user experience community, we are considering how to better integrate our activities with those of other groups. Neither a perception nor a practice of insularity will benefit information architecture practitioners who work alongside other professionals. Towards this goal, we…have recently expressed our support for the emerging UXnet.

Thanks for your support, AIfIA! And thanks to Lou Rosenfeld, UXnet executive council member and AIfIA founding member, for being instrumental to both groups and acting as the liaison between us.

Coverage of our soft launch

A few folks picked up on our “soft launch” and announced it to their readers.

A Soft Launch for UXnet

Monday, June 21st, 2004 by Keith Instone

Welcome to the blog for UXnet. We kick off this blog and UXnet in general with a soft-launch on June 21st.

In general, we will use the UXnet blog to raise awareness of User Experience as an umbrella term for collaboration and cooperation. This will include news of what we are doing here as part of UXnet, but also other activities happening in the community at-large.

Although the purpose of our soft-launch was to stay pretty low-key as we initiated discussions with people and organizations, we did get a little bit of coverage:

UPA supports UXnet

Tuesday, June 8th, 2004 by Keith Instone

The Usability Professionals’ Association (UPA) has agreed to continue its support of UXnet. Back in January of 2003 the UPA Board of Directors enthusiastically agreed to the idea of an umbrella organization for user experience. Now, UPA has again stated its support.

UPA members come from many disciplines. In addition to full-time usability specialists, there are managers, programmers, information architects, user interface designers, interaction designers (to name a few) who are interested in improving the usability of the work they create. The benefits of coordination and cooperation are obvious, and will only strengthen everyone under the UX umbrella.

Thank you for your continued support, UPA! Whitney Quesenbery, as a UXnet executive council member and President of UPA, has obviously been crucial in making these connections.
