Massaging Media 2: Graphic Design Education in the Age of Dynamic Media conference will gather a diverse group of presenters and attendees from around the world for a provocative conversation on how graphic design education is being affected by dynamic media.

Through keynote presentations, panel discussions, multiple-track speaker sessions, a working lunch, and a breakfast roundtable, the conference will focus on five key subject areas: pedagogy; practice; theory; future history; and making it work.

AIGA Pittsburgh’s Designer Dialogue program is a series of frank and open discussions, for AIGA members only, about what really goes into making design happen. Presenters will be talking about projects in-depth, providing a behind-the-scenes look into design goals and fruition - successes, failures, research, processes, and results.

Case Study: Beyond brand standards: how a brand’s character shines through every project. Bob Jacobson sees DUX 2007 conference as fundamentally off the mark

DUX07 Bob Jacobson, design consultant and editor of the anthology Information Design (MIT Press, 1999), is on a roll these days. Today the focus of his provocative commentary is the DUX 2007 conference, which he thinks is “ideologically discomforting” and “fundamentally off the mark”.
“The DUX 2007 conference begins today in Chicago. Thematically, content-wise, and in terms of approach, this is the consummate conference on cutting-edge design. The speakers are top-notch, too. But ideologically, DUX is discomforting. For all its virtues, DUX embodies a set of values that, while commendable, are incomplete and off-kilter. It’s user-centric, not human-centric. And experience, if it is anything, is human.”

The date and location for DUX 2007 were just made public: November 5-7, Chicago, Illinois, USA. This is the 3rd Conference on designing for user experience. I missed the first DUX in 2003, attended the second in 2005.

We are planning some UXnet meetings in conjunction with the conference - so I am definitely going. The challenge will be to get back home for World Usability Day on November 8th. Being in Chicago will help.

DUX 2005, a product of professional association collaboration

A great example of the benefits of professional association collaboration is the Designing for User eXperience conference, the second of which (DUX 2005) will be taking place 3-5 November at the Fort Mason Center in San Francisco, CA USA. AIGA, ACM SIGGRAPH, and ACM SIGCHI have joined forces again to develop what many consider to be the premier conference for user experience practitioners.

Supporting AIGA, SIGGRAPH, SIGCHI, and DUX 2005 are several cooperating societies: IxDG, IIID, UPA, STC, AIS SIGHCI, HFES, IDSA, and IAI. Plus, BayDUX, the local presence of UXnet in the San Francisco Bay Area, is sponsoring the conference’s opening plenary reception, in part in honor of World Usability Day which was scheduled to coincide with the opening day of the conference.

Congratulations to all involved in helping make this event reflect a cross-section of the user experience professional community.

DUX 2005

The 2003 Designing for User Experiences Conference (DUX2003) as been cited as a good example of how organizations can collaborate to create a conference serving the multi-disciplinary needs of user experience practitioners.

We are happy to see the DUX 2005 conference recently be announced: November 3-5 in San Francisco, California. This second DUX conference is, like the first, being co-developed by ACM SIGCHI, AIGA and ACM SIGGRAPH.

You can submit Design Case Studies, Design Practice Studies, Design Research Studies, and (briefer) Design Sketches. Deadline: June 15.

User Experience: Why Do So Many Organizations Believe They Own It?

Don Norman and a panel of representatives of UX organizations discuss several UXnet themes at this BAYCHI event on Tuesday, October 12 at Stanford’s Kresge Auditorium.

Years ago, Don Norman coined the term, “user experience,” which has since become a prominent label for a multidisciplinary field. But what did Don intend the term to mean? What is “user experience,” really? Why do so many professional societies believe they own it? Why do so many organizations in a business believe they own it? Don Norman tackles these and related questions in a conversation with Richard Anderson.

A panel discussion with representatives from multiple UX organizations (UPA, SIGCHI, AIfIA, IxDG, SIGGRAPH, STC, AIGA Experience Design, HFES, IDSA, and UXnet) will follow. The panel, moderated by Rashmi Sinha, will explore the goals and interests of each organization, and how they come together to form the mosaic that is UX.
