Project infusion (Miami, FL, USA)

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009 by Conference Editor
September 23, 2009toSeptember 26, 2009

The IDSA International conference is about Infusion: the act of infusing, pouring in and instilling, as in infusing good principles into the mind

Our global economy is going through dramatic change. Design can be proactive and guide change. We can be a significant influence in creating new value. It has been said that the future is not something that happens…it is something that you make happen. Business is not asking for our help to drive new value, they are demanding it. In the 30s, design helped the economy out of the depression. We are finding ourselves at a moment of opportunity once again. Designers have the tools to create new value for reviving economies.

Project Infusion is a new format for IDSA’s International Conference, which will be held at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel September 23-26. Both domestic and international attendees across diverse disciplines beyond the confines of the IDSA membership are invited to exchange ideas, opinions and insights. This is a project that we will contribute to mutually. We will enjoy its fruits together.

Fresh infusion of inspiration, knowledge and wisdom will fuel our creativity. This will be the process of steeping and soaking substance in order to extract new viewpoints. Project Infusion is an event that you cannot miss. It will be an exchange of ideas that you will want to bring your boss to, or send your employees to. You will learn how to increase your bottom line and that of your business. Participants will be positioned as change agents and leaders of new thinking that can move entire industries forward.

IDSA Midwest conference (Minneapolis, MN)

Friday, April 3rd, 2009 by Conference Editor
April 3, 2009toApril 5, 2009

The Industrial Designers Society of America’s Midwest conference is about “Meaning: Uncovering multiple levels of meaning in the design of objects and experiences.” Meaning can be interpreted many ways regarding the design process. For example:

  • How can we as designers make the object more meaningful to the user?
  • How can the result of a designer’s insight make life experience more meaningful?
  • How can we identify real problems and provide solutions to the everyday person?
  • How can we understand what is meaningful to a person at this time and make that object important, that experience relevant?

It is these questions that will be investigated, explored and presented at this conference.

Giving Form to Vision: Balancing the Three Disciplines of Leadership, Innovation, & Execution
Stuart Morgan, Director of Industrial Design and Human Factors for
Ethicon Endo-Surgery. Thursday, September 18, 8:00pm
Margaret Morrison Breed Hall, on the Carnegie Mellon main campus

For design to play a significant role in the success of an organization, the three disciplines of leadership, innovation, and execution must be active and in balance. Over the past six years, the role of design at Ethicon Endo-Surgery has changed from one of support to one of leadership. Through recent product examples, Morgan’s lecture will outline guiding principles, strategies, processes, methods, and tools employed to deliver significant results to the company, and show the importance of balancing the three disciplines of design.

Morgan is director of Industrial Design and Human Factors for Ethicon Endo-Surgery, a Johnson & Johnson Company based in Cincinnati, Ohio, that develops and markets advanced medical devices for minimally invasive and open surgical procedures. He is responsible for product branding and usability in the corporation, including design strategy and user research. He envisioned and led the development of ethnographic research methods and visualization tools, transforming the new product development process within the corporation and establishing usability as a standard of innovation in the surgical device industry. Under his leadership the industrial design and human factors group has moved from support into a leadership role.
