Eric Meyer: The Future of the Web (Is Now) - (Cleveland, OH, USA)

ERIC MEYER has been working with the web since late 1993 and is an internationally recognized expert on the subjects of HTML, CSS, and web standards. A widely read author, he is the founder of Complex Spiral Consulting, which counts among its clients America On-Line; Apple Computer, Inc.; Wells Fargo Bank; and Macromedia.

This event, part of the “Web Work/Web Wisdom” series, will include ample time for Q&A and networking afterwards.

Web Work/Web Wisdom will continue on Tuesday Feb. 23rd with “Web Standards? What’s in it for me?”, March 23rd: “Usability? Not my problem” and April 27th: “Starting a Web business.”

CSS For Print Designers: Workshop (Cleveland, OH, USA)

What to expect?

There will be no lecture, no background on the history of the Internet, no boring crap that doesn’t help you build a web site. We’ll dive right in and show you how to code a site, then send you off with the tools you need to take it to the next level. You will need to bring a laptop, because you are going to get your hands dirty. This lab-style workshop was created specifically for print designers who are ready to take the next step in web design—to learn a little bit of code.

NOTE: This is a hands on workshop which requires you to bring your laptop. Also, be sure to check out the “what do I need to do before” section at the bottom of this page—there are a few other things you will need to do to prepare for the workshop. Don’t worry, it shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes. The workshop itself will last a little over two hours, during which you’ll actually code by hand. Notes for the material covered will be provided, so you can focus on the work and not remembering stuff. There will be a break and time to mingle before and after the workshop.

Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

Is this workshop for me?

Do you know how to clear floats? If the answer is “yes,” and you actually know what that means, this workshop may be a bit basic. Otherwise, this workshop is for you.

1. Get a text editor like TextWrangler (Mac) or PSPad (Win).
2. Install Firefox and the Firebug plugin.
3. Install an FTP program like Filezilla and know how to use it.

NEOSTC - Second Life (Cleveland, OH, USA)

Please join the Northeast Ohio STC community as we kick off our 2009/2010 meeting year on August 6th, 2009. The topic is Second Life.

Second Life is a virtual world developed by Linden Lab that launched on June 23, 2003 and is accessible via the Internet. A free client program called the Second Life Viewer allows users to interact with each other through avatars. Users can explore, meet other users, socialize, participate in individual and group activities, and create and trade virtual property and services with one another, and more in this virtual world.

Topic: This presentation will provide an introduction to Second Life, including registration, selecting and modifying your avatar, navigation, communication and basic editing and building. A virtual “tour” will be conducted of selected areas of interest in Second Life. Time will be provided for questions related to the use of Second Life for a variety of purposes.

Presenter: Dr. Pamela Mitchell

Dr. Mitchell  is a tenured  Associate Professor in the School of Health Sciences at Kent State University. She has been involved with technology applications since the 80’s, and has developed expertise and experience in virtual worlds such as Second Life since 2006. She has conducted numerous presentations and trainings in the use of virtual worlds, and has developed case studies, simulations and assistive technology to improve learning and problem solving. Her work in virtual worlds has been featured in the Kent State magazine, Ohio magazine, and Second Life events.
