NH UPA March Meeting: Are Focus Groups Worth It?

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010 by Kyle Soucy
March 24, 2010
6:00 pmto8:00 pm

Focus Groups have always been part of the design research toolkit. Sometimes focus groups get a bad rap as too soft, or too biased, or not helpful enough. But, done effectively they can really help inspire innovation and guide the design process. Please join us for the March 24th NH UPA meeting where RIVA-certified Master Moderator, Kay Corry Aubrey, will share her expertise on moderating focus groups. RSVP to info@nhupa.org if you plan to attend so we can plan appropriately.

Kay will cover:

When it’s appropriate to run focus groups  (dispelling some myths and showing when and how it can work)
Where insights from focus groups fit into design research (capturing user trends, perceptions, beliefs, and attitudes on a product or service)
How to plan a group (putting together the moderator guide, crafting questions, designing activities, strategic use of group process)
What it takes to be a good moderator (and how being a good moderator also makes you a better interviewer)
How to deal with issues (keeping people on topic, ensuring no one dominates)
What you can expect to learn:

Gain an accurate understanding of the type of user insights focus groups produce
Where focus groups fit into Usability and UI Design
How to create hybrid studies that combine focus groups with usability testing, card sorts and other traditional research methods
Skills you need to run them
Where you can go to learn these (Kay will provide a bibliography of resources)
When:
Wednesday March 24th
Refreshments & Networking: 6-7pm
Meeting: 7pm – 8ish

Where:
PixelMEDIA
75 New Hampshire Avenue, Suite 100
Portsmouth, NH 03801

“Personas and Mental Models” - James Kalbach (Hamburg, Germany)

Thursday, January 8th, 2009 by Karen Lindemann
May 20, 2009

MAY 20, 2009 - Workshop in Hamburg, Germany:

Communicating user research effectively is critical for user-centred design. This full-day course has two parts that show how to bring your research to life:

Part 1: Personas - Personas have become a mainstream design tool. There’s even a growing body of literature on the subject, including two full-length books. But there are also misconceptions and misuses of personas in the field.

This course will begin by outline the importance and the use of personas. You will then be presented a simplified technique for consistently creating a balanced set of personas that is relevant to your business needs. You will learn:

  • About the history and application of personas
  • How to segment personas along the most important aspects of your target groups
  • How to write effective persona documents
  • How to use personas effectively in daily work

Part 2: Mental Models - The term “mental models” means different things to different people. In this workshop, we use the term broadly to refer to any technique used to understand the behavioural, cognitive, and emotional states of users.

You will learn about some of the leading tools to both capture and reflect mental models, including:

  • Scenarios: These are written descriptions of users’ actions and thoughts used to envision an ideal future.
  • Behaviour Models: Based on a phased approach of understanding user behaviour, you’ll effectively map features and requirements to user needs.
  • Alignment Diagrams: This is a particular methodology pioneered by Indi Young in her book of the same name. You’ll learn how to create these diagrams and use them in your work.

Who should attend:

Usability and user experience consultans, information architects, web designers, product managers, market managers, webmasters and others who are concerning about websites.

NH UPA June Meeting: Speed Networking & Topic Discussions

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008 by Kyle Soucy
June 25, 2008
6:00 pmto8:00 pm

NH UPA is trying a new and fun meeting format for June. We’re calling the meeting format NH UPA Speed Networking - similar to speed dating, but obviously with a different goal in mind!

All those attending the meeting will have the chance to speak with others in a one-on-one or small group format for a short period of time before rotating to meet with others. This will be more than just small talk, though. After a quick introduction, the discussion will focus on specific topics of interest relating to usability and design. We hope the format will help attendees learn about fellow NH UPA members, hear what others are doing, learn different viewpoints on issues, and be inspired by other’s ideas. There is no homework or requirements for the meeting and the discussions will be open to experienced professionals and beginners alike.

Specific Topics for Discussion may include:
Usability in Agile Software Development
Making the Business Case for User Experience Design
Preferred Prototyping Methods
Eye Tracking - Valuable or Hype?
Use of Personas
Favorite IA Methods - Card Sorting, Freelisting, Content Analysis, etc
Inspiring Interfaces
Web Site Navigation Paradigms
Recommended Books and Learning Opportunities
AJAX and Web 2.0 Technology
Others…
