NH UPA February Meeting: UX Cliff Notes!

February 24, 2010
6:00 pmto9:00 pm

Time: 6-7pm Networking/7-8pm Meeting
Topic: UX Cliff Notes: Reviews of Current Usability and User Experience Books
Location: TBD

With the growth of the usability and user experience professions, the number of books available on the topic has exploded. Books range from specific instructions on methods or techniques, to conceptual ideas that challenge traditional thinking. It’s hard to keep up with all of the reading, so we decided to help out. During this meeting, several of our members will give a brief report on user experience and usability books they’ve read recently. The reviewers will summarize the key highlights of the book, lead a discussion on how the material could be applied, and discuss the implications for practitioners. Books to be reviewed are:

  • Neuro Web Design: What Makes Them Click? by Susan M. Weinschenk (http://tinyurl.com/yjr8k9t)
  • Prototyping: A Practitioner’s Guide by Todd Zaki Warfel (http://tinyurl.com/yg4dgeh)
  • Moderating Usability Tests: Principles and Practices for Interacting by Joe Dumas and Beth Loring (http://tinyurl.com/yfd8zqx)
  • Visual Thinking: for Design  by Colin Ware (http://tinyurl.com/ygwoznv)

There is room for one more book review. If you read something recently you would like to discuss, please let us know.

Rahel Bailie on Workhorse Strategy for Workhorse Content

January 28, 2010
6:30 pmto8:00 pm

Join CHI*Atlanta to kick off 2010 with Rahel Bailie’s perspective on content strategy.

Content strategy has opened up a new paradigm for considering user experience: in the online search for information, the user experience is the treasure hunt; the content is the treasure being hunted. UX professionals are starting to shift design methods from pouring content into decorative boxes to designing for optimum delivery of content. However, designing for instructive content can be quite different than designing for persuasive content, with a set of priorities that differs, though overlaps, those generally considered in the UX world. Each genre of content has its unique challenges for design and delivery. This presentation looks at how the medium affects the message and how to deal with the thornier ways of designing for content re-use and single-sourcing for the content genres beyond the marketing messages.

CSS For Print Designers: Workshop (Cleveland, OH, USA)

December 14, 2009
1:30 pmto5:00 pm
January 14, 2010
8:30 amto12:00 pm

What to expect?

There will be no lecture, no background on the history of the Internet, no boring crap that doesn’t help you build a web site. We’ll dive right in and show you how to code a site, then send you off with the tools you need to take it to the next level. You will need to bring a laptop, because you are going to get your hands dirty. This lab-style workshop was created specifically for print designers who are ready to take the next step in web design—to learn a little bit of code.

NOTE: This is a hands on workshop which requires you to bring your laptop. Also, be sure to check out the “what do I need to do before” section at the bottom of this page—there are a few other things you will need to do to prepare for the workshop. Don’t worry, it shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes. The workshop itself will last a little over two hours, during which you’ll actually code by hand. Notes for the material covered will be provided, so you can focus on the work and not remembering stuff. There will be a break and time to mingle before and after the workshop.

Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

Is this workshop for me?

Do you know how to clear floats? If the answer is “yes,” and you actually know what that means, this workshop may be a bit basic. Otherwise, this workshop is for you.

  1. Advance your career with web skills
  2. Learn CSS layout and semantic HTML
  3. Make designs that are easier to code
  4. Actually understand what you’re doing

YOUR HOST, JD GRAFFAM

A Memphis web designer/developer, JD Graffam has presented to small groups on other web topics such as Search Engine Strategy, web standards and usability.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO BEFORE?
